Why High-Pressure Water Is Dangerous for Electric Scooters

The biggest mistake one can ever make is cleaning an electric scooter using a hosepipe or a car wash machine.

Imagine damaging your scooter unknowingly through cleaning. While car wash machines use high pressure capable of removing dirt within a short time, the same should not apply to scooters. Here is why washing scooters with a hose pipe is prohibited.

Are electric scooters waterproof?

The bone of contention among many scooter owners is the belief that scooters are waterproof.

This is not true.

Scooters are only weather-resistant, not waterproof.

Although some scooters come with high ingress protection ratings such as IPX5 and IPX6, these ratings are only meant to protect against splashes and low-pressure water, not the intense pressure emitted from hosepipes and car wash machines.

Unlike cars, which have sealed chassis, electric scooters are made of delicate hardware and mechanical parts where water can easily penetrate and reach sensitive internal components, causing serious damage that may be difficult and expensive to repair or replace.

Dangers of cleaning electric scooters with a hosepipe

Another significant risk that may arise from using a car wash sprayer on this eco-friendly device is when high-pressure water reaches the battery and motor, which act as the heart and brain of the scooter.

These parts are a complete no-go zone for water. They are only protected by basic rubber and silicone gaskets.

High pressure can bypass these protective seals and cause immediate short circuits that may permanently damage the motherboard.

In some cases, replacing the motherboard can cost almost as much as buying a new scooter.

Water ingress can also damage the thermal system and may even trigger a thermal runaway, which can lead to a fire that is extremely difficult to extinguish.

In addition, the electric motors of most scooters are located inside the wheel compartment.

Why can’t electric scooters withstand high pressure

Although they are designed to handle wet pavements, they cannot withstand high-pressure water.

When moisture penetrates these sections, it causes rapid oxidation, leading to corrosion.

Corrosion increases friction, causes the motor to overheat, and may eventually result in complete mechanical failure.

The wheel bearings may also suffer severe damage if water finds its way inside. These bearings are packed with specialised grease that ensures smooth operation.

A pressurised sprayer acts like a degreaser, stripping away this essential lubrication and leading to creaking noises and a rough riding experience.

Electric scooter corrosion

Corrosion is like cancer – it is often a slow and invisible killer that may take days or even weeks before fully manifesting, especially when it occurs in hidden parts of the scooter where moisture builds up unnoticed.

Severe corrosion can lead to intermittent power loss, throttle malfunction, or even unexpected acceleration.

Such glitches are usually very difficult and costly to repair.

Why is the warranty void for water ingress

Beyond physical damage, washing an electric scooter with a hose pipe can also void your warranty. Most scooter manuals clearly prohibit the use of pressure washers during cleaning.

Manufacturers can easily detect water damage using internal stickers known as ‘Liquid Contact Indicators’ (LCIs), which change colour when they come into contact with water.

Once these sensors are triggered, manufacturers may deny warranty claims, forcing you to dig deep into your pocket to pay for repairs or replacement parts.

Scooter cleaning tips

Instead of using a hose pipe or taking your scooter to a car wash, simply use water in a basin or bucket mixed with soap.

Take a soft microfibre cloth and first remove the layer of dust before dipping it into the water.

Make sure the cloth is well wrung out before cleaning the scooter. Wash from top to bottom carefully and gently.

Drying an electric scooter after washing

After cleaning the scooter, dry it thoroughly using a clean, dry cloth. You may also allow it to air dry or sun dry for a short period.

By avoiding the temptation of quick pressure washing, you significantly extend the lifespan of your scooter and protect yourself against unnecessary and costly repairs.

Scooters are highly efficient when properly maintained.
