Components and Specifications of Electric Scooters

With the growing interest in electric scooters, it is important to understand the different components that make up this eco-friendly mode of transport. Electric scooters come in various forms and classifications.

Small models are categorised as bicycles, medium to large ones resemble motorcycles, and there are also three-wheeled versions classified as tuk-tuk electric scooters.

This discussion focuses mainly on the two-wheeled electric scooter bikes.

In Kenya, these modern mobility machines are assembled and sold at various e-scooter assembly points, with some of the most notable being CFAO and Ocean Traders.

Storage and Utility Features

Electric scooters are designed with multiple storage compartments for convenience. Most models have:

  • A front luggage compartment located above the front tyre
  • A rear storage box on some models, extending behind the rider
  • An under-seat compartment, commonly used to store the charger and other small items

These features make the scooter practical for daily commuting and light business use.

Scooter Battery and Charging

Electric scooters come with 3 rechargeable batteries, and most models include a charger that can be plugged into a standard home socket, similar to a laptop charger.

  • Charging time: approximately 6–8 hours, depending on battery capacity
  • Charging indicator: a dashboard light changes from red to green when fully charged
  • Battery system: most scooters use multiple batteries (commonly three in larger models) for a longer range
  • Some scooters may produce a soft sound during charging, but it is not disruptive.

Scooter Safety and Security Features

Safety is a key aspect of electric scooters. Common features include:

  • A free protective helmet is provided with purchase (size dependent on model)
  • A key system with a spare key for backup
  • A remote-controlled locking system that immobilises the scooter when activated
  • An alarm system that triggers loud alerts if tampered with
  • Rearview mirrors for visibility of approaching traffic

When locked, the scooter cannot move until it is unlocked using the remote or key, enhancing security against theft.

Lighting and Control Systems on scooters

Electric scooters are equipped with advanced lighting and control systems, including:

  • Front headlights with adjustable brightness for night riding
  • Brake lights and turn indicators for road communication
  • A digital dashboard displaying battery and performance status

These features improve safety and visibility in different riding conditions.

Mobility and Stability Features

To ensure stability, scooters are fitted with:

  • Side stands, and center stands for parking balance
  • Shock absorbers for smooth riding on uneven roads
  • Footrests and leg space, especially on larger models designed for passengers
  • Some small scooters also allow space for a passenger.

Advanced Functions on scooters

Modern electric scooters include advanced driving functions such as the following:

  • Reverse gear for easy maneuvering
  • Parking mode for secure stopping
  • Cruise control for maintaining a steady speed on highways

Speed and Range

  • Maximum speed: up to 80 km/h for standard electric scooter models
  • Cargo electric bikes: up to 65 km/h
  • Range: up to 150 km on a full charge, depending on model and load

There are also cargo versions designed for business and delivery services:

  • Load capacity: up to 500 kg
  • Strong suspension system with three shock absorbers
  • Large storage compartments for goods

Cost: approximately KSh 180,000 (depending on model and supplier)

These models are highly suitable for logistics, delivery services, and small business operations.

Rise of Electric Scooters

This comes at a time when Kenya is transitioning fully into an electric mobility hub, aiming to become a leader in East Africa.

This has led the Ministry of Transport to introduce laws that will support this shift. According to the National e-mobility policy launched in February by Transport Minister Davis Chirchir, all buildings to be constructed henceforth are required to be fitted with charging ports for electric vehicles.

This has resulted in an influx of purchases of electric scooters.
