How to improve electric scooter water resistance

Here are some of the ways you can improve your electric scooter’s water resistance ability. There has always been a concern about whether a scooter is water-resistant or waterproof. This is a question that is yet to be fully unravelled.

IP Rating Explained

The water resistance of a scooter depends on the ingress protection (IP) rating, which determines the ability of a scooter to prevent water from entering its internal components.

The higher the ingress protection rating, the better the scooter is at preventing water ingress.

Why Scooters Are Not Waterproof

Most electric scooters have an ingress protection rating of IPX4 or IPX5, which is not sufficient to prevent water ingress during heavy splashes, heavy downpours, or when washing the scooter with a high-pressure hose.

It is important to know the water resistance rating of your scooter since it is made of gaskets and rubber seals that cannot withstand high water pressure.

Even slight pressure can allow water to enter the internal components. This is why it is important to improve the water resistance capacity of your scooter.

Protecting scooter charging ports

One way to do this is by installing diodes on the charging ports. Without a diode, charging ports can spark, arc, and remain live, which is dangerous if they get wet or are left open.

Splicing a diode into the positive cable of your charging port ensures that electricity flows in only one direction, preventing backflow from the battery and eliminating sparks.

Sealing scooter Gaps with Silicone

Another method is sealing gaps with silicone. Many scooters have large gaps where cables enter the deck, allowing water thrown by the tyres to reach the controllers.

To fix this, you should clean the area thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to ensure proper adhesion, then apply a thin bead of silicone around cable entry points and contact surfaces. After that, reassemble the parts and clean up any excess silicone that squeezes out.

Securing Exposed Cables

You should also protect exposed cables by using zip ties to secure motor cables and keep them away from potential impact zones such as curbs, which could damage the housing and compromise the seal.

Are electric scooters waterproof?

These modifications make the scooter water-resistant, not waterproof, so you should avoid deep puddles or river crossings. Silicone sealing may also make future repairs slightly more difficult because it will need to be carefully removed during maintenance. After resealing, always check that your motors and all sensor connections, such as hall sensors, are functioning correctly.

Wet Weather Precautions

Every rider should always guard their electric scooter against water ingress. Scooters are made of complex circuits, and when water comes into contact with them, there is a risk of short-circuiting.

Improving Scooter Protection

Additionally, when water enters hidden parts of the scooter, it can cause corrosion, which may lead to irreparable damage, making repairs difficult and reducing the overall lifespan of the scooter.
