Riding electric scooters in winter

Knowing how to use your electric scooter during winter conditions is important. Winter can take a toll on your scooter since it is usually characterised by cold, wet pavements, moisture, ice, and snow. These conditions can make cruising on two wheels difficult. Scooters are meant to be enjoyable, not stressful.

Winter scooter riding safety tips

The first precaution to consider when handling your scooter during freezing seasons is proper scooter care.

Make sure you store it in a cool and dry place. If your battery is detachable, remove it and store it in a warm place.

Scooter battery winter care

Before charging it, ensure it is properly warmed because charging it while cold can lead to permanent damage. During winter seasons, if you are storing your scooter for long periods, make sure the battery has a charge of about 20 to 30 percent.

Anything below this may damage the battery over time. After riding for long distances, do not charge immediately; allow it to rest for about 30 minutes or let it warm up before charging.

During winter, expect the battery to charge more slowly since lithium ions move sluggishly due to the cold weather, which makes charging take longer.

Winter clothing

Before riding an electric scooter in winter, make sure you are wearing suitable clothing relevant to this weather. There is no need to freeze while riding an electric scooter, so ensure you are warm. The most important safety gear a rider should have is a helmet to prevent head injuries. You should also wear a warm jacket and boots, essentially proper winter clothing. Protect your eyes with skiing goggles to prevent wind and foreign objects from entering your eyes.

In case of icy roads, navigate carefully and avoid long distances since the battery drains faster during winter conditions.

This is due to the higher amount of power needed to push the scooter because the chemical ions in the battery move more slowly, requiring more energy and causing faster battery drain. Tyre pressure also drops faster under freezing temperatures, so always ensure your tyres are properly inflated to support your journey.

Winter tyres for electric scooters

This is one of the reasons why long-distance riding is discouraged in winter conditions. You should also use winter or all-terrain tyres that provide better grip on slippery roads.

Electric scooter waterproof rating

Avoid water splashes when navigating such roads since winter is often rainy. Prevent water from entering the scooter by using models with a higher ingress protection rating such as IPX5 or IPX6.

Scooter water damage

These ratings help reduce water damage to critical scooter parts. Scooters use rubber and gasket seals that prevent water from entering, but high-pressure water or full submersion can break these seals, allowing water to enter and cause corrosion or short-circuiting.

Winter electric scooter safety

Always ride at relatively slow speeds so that you can brake safely when needed since roads are often slippery and braking distance is increased.
