How To Fix A Flat Tire On An Electric Scooter

This step-by-step guide explains how to repair a flat tire on an electric scooter. If you find yourself having a blowout on your electric scooter, you have come to the right place. Patch or replace your tyre without needing to take it to a mechanic with this easy step-by-step guide will help you work out for pneumatic and tubeless tyres.

One of the most frequent issues that electric scooter riders encounter is the flat tire, and fortunately, it’s one of the easiest to resolve. For people riding a Xiaomi, Segway or any other brand, it’s more or less the same thing.

How To Repair a Flat Tire On An Electric Scooter, step-by-step No mechanic needed.

What type of tyres does your scooter have?

The first thing to know before picking up any tools is what kind of tyre your scooter has. The repair process will vary as per this.

The most common tyres are pneumatic (air-filled) tyres. These can be either tubed or tubeless. Solid (airless) tyres are made of foam or rubber. These are not flat, but they cannot be fixed like these. In the case of a solid tyre, an entire new tyre must be replaced when it becomes damaged.

Before going on, make sure you know what type of scooter you have by referring to the manual or the tyre sidewall.

Tools You’ll Need

Before you begin, collect these:

– Tyre levers (2–3)

– Adjustable wrench or allen key set

– Puncture repair kit (patches and rubber cement)

– Bucket of water or soapy water (to find the puncture)

-A pump or air compressor that can be moved around with the person.

– A patch kit (this comes with a variety of sandpaper)

– Replacement inner tube (optional – for back-up)

How to Change a Flat Tyre on an Electric scooter Step-by-Step.

STEP 1: Turn the scooter off and stabilise it.

Turn off the scooter completely and disconnect its battery, if possible. Turn the scooter upside down or stand it firmly on a flat surface. Do not work on a scooter that may roll over or tip over.

STEP 2: Remove the wheel from the car.

Loosen the wheel’s axle nuts or bolts with your wrench or Allen key.

– Front wheel: Unscrew the two wheel axle nuts on both sides and remove the wheel.

– Rear wheel: You will also need to disconnect the motor cable before removing it. Make a picture of the way the cable is attached first, since it will be easier to reassemble.

When the nuts have fallen off gently remove the wheel from the fork.

STEP 3: Deflate the tyre completely.

If there’s still air in the tyre, release it by pressing the valve stem. It is much easier to work on a tyre that has been completely deflated.

STEP 4: Take the Tyre off of the Rim

Place the tire lever between the tire bead and rim. Using a second lever, bring one side of the tire over the rim’s edge and then traverse the circumference of the rim. Take your time; it might harm the rim or tube.

When one side of the tire is clear, the inner tube can be removed from the inside of the tire.

removing the tire

Locate the Puncture.

Inflate the inner tube slightly (just enough to hold its shape). Place it in a bucket of water and see if it foams; the air is escaping through the foam.

Or hold the tube without letting it touch your ear and hear if there is a hissing sound.

If it is discovered, label it with a pen or chalk.

Pro tip: Run your fingers along the inside of the tyre as well to feel for any debris, another nail or shard of glass will cause another flat right away.

STEP 6: patch the puncture

1)Thoroughly dry the tube around the puncture.

2) Do a little sanding to roughen the surface.

3) Use rubber cement on the roughened area and allow it to become tacky (approx 60 seconds).

4) Apply pressure to the patch and keep it on for 2 minutes or longer.

Before reassembling, inflate the tube gently to ensure that the patch is holding.

N/B: Replace rather than patch: If the hole is larger than 6mm, If there are more than one puncture, If the valve stem is damaged – replace the inner tube.

STEP 7: Re-construct the Tyre

1.Return the inner tube (patched (or new)) to the tyre and ensure it is not twisted in any way.

2.Hand put the tire bead back on the rim starting from the valve stem. Continue working around until the entire bead is in place.

3. Make sure that the tyre sits all around the rim evenly.

STEP 8: Reattach the Wheel and Inflate.

Return the wheel to the fork, and tighten the axle nuts securely. The connection of the rear wheel motor cable should be the same as it was before.

Check the recommended PSI (side wall of the tyre or in the manual) and inflate it to that. The electric scooter tyres are normally between 40-65 PSI.

Always test before riding.

Spin the wheel before placing on it, to ensure that it turns freely. Test it out on the scooter for a short period of time at a low speed to make sure the tyre is positioned properly and it isn’t leaking.

What About Tubeless Tyres?

Tubeless tyres are used on some newer scooters. In most cases, punctures can be repaired without removing the wheel all the way, for small punctures:

Step 1: Take out the nail or object that punctured the tire.

Step 2: Use a tubeless tyre plug tool kit to insert the tubeless tyre plug.

Step 3: Cut off the surplus plug even with the tyre’s surface.

Step 4: Re-Inflate to Proper PSI.

Tubeless plug kits are affordable and a great addition to any scooter tool kit.

How to Avoid Future Flat Tires!

– Inspect tires every week for pressure. When it comes to tires, under inflated tires have a much higher risk of getting a flat.

– If possible, do not ride over glass, gravel or over kerbs.

– Consider tire sealant. Some products, such as “Slime,” are added to the inner tube and will seal small punctures automatically as they occur.

-Regularly check tires for debris that is stuck in the tire, cracks and worn tires.

If you have any concerns, consult a professional. At scooter planet.

If the tyre is a solid foam tyre that has split or become worn, they must be replaced preferably by a repair shop. Likewise, in the event of the rim bending or breaking during the incident which caused the flat, professional evaluation is recommended.
