Many people reduce their scooter battery life unknowingly, and after damaging it for a considerable period, symptoms of battery failure appear.
This is when riders realise that something is not right with their electric scooter. Symptoms such as reduced riding range, sluggish acceleration, and massive battery drain, or even swelling in the battery, are signs that their eco-friendly vessels are not in good condition.
Common Charging Mistakes
Here are the mistakes.

One common mistake scooter riders make is draining their battery to zero consistently. This damages the battery cells.
Deep Discharge Damage
The plates begin wearing out due to massive oxidation. When you allow an electric scooter battery to drain to 0% and remain empty for prolonged periods, you force it into a state of deep discharge.
This triggers a destructive chain of chemical and physical reactions inside the lithium-ion cells, permanently reducing their ability to hold and transfer energy.
Charging an electric scooter immediately after a ride can also damage it to a large extent. It is not advisable to charge the battery while it is still hot; instead, wait for the battery to cool for at least 20 to 30 minutes before plugging it in. When charging, always use the original charger.
Overcharging Battery Risks

Another way of damaging your scooter is overcharging it. Leaving the charger plugged into the socket for days despite the battery being fully charged can be harmful. Most modern scooters have an automatic shutoff, but leaving them plugged in for long periods can still lead to trickle charging, which may eventually lead to battery failure.
Wrong Charger Usage
Using a charger that is not original can also cause issues. It is advisable to only use a different charger if it has the same voltage specifications and is from the same brand. Using an incompatible charger can cause damage, overcharging, or even fire hazards.
When cleaning your scooter, it is also advisable to remove the battery if it is removable and ensure the charging port is well sealed to prevent moisture from entering the area, which could lead to a short circuit when plugged in.
Water Damage Risks
Water ingress into the battery compartment during washing is also dangerous and can reduce the lifespan of your battery. This is especially common when using high-pressure washers, as they can break gaskets and rubber seals, allowing water to enter parts of the scooter that are not protected, leading to corrosion that gradually destroys the scooter.
Improper scooter storage
Improper storage of a scooter is also dangerous. Storing it in temperatures around -5°C can reduce its capacity and may cause internal damage, especially if it is charged while frozen.
Riding in heavy rain, especially conditions that exceed the scooter’s ingress protection rating, can automatically damage the battery and other critical components, reducing its lifespan.
Scooter Maintenance Errors
Overloading and carrying weight higher than the recommended limit also puts a lot of strain on the scooter battery, causing it to overheat.
